The main mission of the CSH is to contribute to the development and circulation of social science knowledge, based on a multi-disciplinary approach, on India and South Asian countries and societies The Centre for Social Sciences and Humanities (CSH) is part of a network of 27 research centres of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2007 it was accorded the status of Joint Entity of French Research Institutes Abroad or UMIFRE (no 20) of the Ministry and the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). The institution traces its origins to 1980 when the French Archaeological Delegation in Afghanistan moved, from Kabul to Delhi, following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. It was renamed the French Archaeological Mission in India. The Centre de Sciences Humaines was officially created in 1990 and initially conducted research on history and Indo-Persian culture. In 1995, there was a shift in the research focus and the CSH became a centre specialising in the study of issues related to the contemporary dynamics of development in India and South Asia.
